Lyrren Er Yot'Ah

Lyrren Er Yot’Ah comes from a humble background. His parents, both cooks by trade, worked each day in the local market preparing meals and foodstuffs for the passerby as well as by special order. Neither were of great renown but were each competent at their trade and respected by those that knew them. During holidays they were known to volunteer their skill to help prepare the feasts that were a tradition for Anya Sur.

Lyrren’s childhood was unremarkable but marred by mischief and complacency. A very young Lyrren was more troublesome than most, possessing an inquisitive nature that got him into trouble. Very early in his life he proved he was a keen observer with a good memory, which served him well when he wanted to get into trouble that he had no business being a part of. Lyrren would also surprise adults by how much he would learn and retain, often in unexpected ways. He was known to worm his way into places where he was not wanted, embarrassing his parents by sneaking into other people’s homes, or tampering and playing with things a child should not be meddling with. He was a source of clever headaches.

As he aged, his mischievous nature subsided but was replaced with a rebellious spirit. He did not want to be a cook like his parents, but like most children coming of age his first apprenticeship was with his parents. Though he had the talent to cook, it was clear that he was unwilling to spend his life in a kitchen like his parents were. His spirit was not in it, so Lyrren spent his first fledgling years of adulthood reluctantly cooking alongside his parents until at last he left them.

His second apprenticeship was in the trades, working under a potter. Despite performing well, he was just as unhappy in this trade as he had been the last. It was not clear to anyone that knew him what would have made him happy, as he was not sure of that himself. He would leave his apprenticeship and drift through his small community, but few wanted to take him as an apprentice due to his history of quitting. He was also too young to possess a skill of his own with which to start his own trade.

It is frowned upon to be a drifter like this, and it left him with a poor reputation as someone lazy and unreliable, more of a nuisance than anything else.

With this embarrassment, he was forced to serve in the City Watch, as was the tradition in Anya Sur when someone failed to find work. Once he was put under the firm guidance of the Queen’s military there was little for Lyrren to do but to listen and obey. His happiness was secondary to his obedience, but it would be here that he would learn to wield his talents to his advantage, if only by accident.

His keen eye for observation and his sharp memory had helped him get into trouble as a child, but now in the City Watch he discovered that there was always a mountain of work to be done, and it was sometimes difficult to keep track of it all. Armor and weapons flowed like water from one set of hands to another, and it all needed to be maintained. Horses and camels all needed tending. The barracks and garrisons had a litany of daily chores designed for their upkeep. Lyrren proved himself to be very capable at keeping all of that in clear mind. In his unhappiness he buried himself in his work, performing his duties, and often without needing to be reminded or being told to. When it was noticed that Lyrren was clearly capable of managing several different tasks at once, his betters made it his job to continue doing exactly as he was.

He had been a mediocre soldier, ill-suited to fighting, but as a busybody whose job it was to make sure all of the odds and ends were kept in good order and in their proper place, he was quite talented. He remained in this position for several years before he was pulled from the City Watch to do the same work but for the Queen’s Keep. His responsibilities were the same within the Keep as they were for the City Watch’s garrisons, but the volume of the work was much smaller due to the Keep having fewer people and needs.

Lyrren had grown so accustomed to burying himself in his work that when he found himself with too much idle time, he couldn’t hide from his unhappiness and began to look for more work to do. Despite being a soldier, he began to notice and memorize the duties of the servants whom he worked alongside and began to remind them to do their jobs and how they were expected to be done. Eventually, this too was noticed by his betters. It was decided that since he was a poor fit for a soldier, he should be stripped of his rank and given a new, but similar role, as a servant in the Queen’s Keep. His duties were mostly the same, but only regarding the work of the servants, which was much more numerous. He was to make sure everything that needed doing was being done, and that it was done properly.

It was easy for Lyrren to bury himself in this task, as the volume work for a servant was significantly greater than that of a soldier within the Keep.

This position is where he would remain, spending decades of his life serving in the Queen’s Keep. He would observe, learn, and then manage every responsibility within the Keep, except for the kitchen. Not for his avoiding the kitchen, but due to the master of the Keep’s kitchens ruling over her domain with such intensity that Lyrren’s own intensity could not break its way in. So, he left the kitchens to her while he managed everything else.

His dedication to the job led to Lyrren becoming respected, trusted, and often hated. His loyalty to Anya Sur was never questioned, and he was largely free to handle his profession as he saw fit. He learned what was demanded of him, saw around him what the Royal Family wanted and needed, listened to his betters, and deployed himself full force to see to it that each day saw its labor done and to everyone’s satisfaction.

What hatred he earned was due to his exacting and particular nature. Lyrren is well known to be a highly critical man, one to nitpick everything around him in pursuit of the highest quality result possible. His subordinates would suffer long lectures regarding the quality of their work, and everyone that served him spent their days hoping they could complete their day’s tasks without him noticing them. If they did their jobs well, he wouldn’t notice them, as it so happened. If you did them poorly, you would return home that night very stressed.

Though his work ethic was valuable, much of it was self-serving. The better he served the higher he rose, until he eventually reached a status so very high within the Queen’s Keep. His command of the Keep extended only to the servant class, but he held enough reigns of power to not only do the work as he saw fit, but to have his advice be sought after by his peers. Through his leadership, others below him often worked their way into their own smaller positions of authority, once they had proven to Lyrren that they were capable of the task.

At the peak of his power, the only authority he answered to were the members of the Royal Family, Eldest Thalla Fah Kah’Seh, and the highest-ranking members of the Queen’s army, of which only three served within Anya Sur.

When Prince Waylen Sundile arrived in Anya Sur to attend the Festival of Founding, Lyrren was selected by Eldest Thalla to devote himself fully to the Prince’s care. Though this was not considered a demotion, much of Lyrren’s responsibilities were removed from him so that he could instead focus solely on the visiting Prince’s care. His authority still remained, but his attention was stolen by a much narrower scope of duty.

In his personal life, he has taken a wife, a Feon Fah Lu’Ran, who is much younger than himself. She is a cook working in the Keep’s kitchens and serves there each day helping to prepare meals for the Keep’s large staff of servants and soldiers. It is known that she is the one who pursued him first, and that after only a single year of courtship they were wed.
